Easy Outfit Formulas For January And Beyond

Do you ever feel like you’ve forgotten how to get dressed? Wardrobe paralysis can strike me at any time of year, but I’m especially prone to it in January. It’s probably a hangover from the loungewear days of Twixmas, combined with ‘back to school’ angst.

Either way, the first month of the year always has me longing for an outfits-by-numbers handbook. Like Fleabag, I want someone to tell me what to wear every morning. It’s easy to dismiss outfit formulas as magazine speak – but in reality, they can save you time, keep you sane, and lift you out of your style slump.

So, I’m here to bring you some quick fashion maths. These aren’t ‘rules’, more flexible guidelines that you can adapt to your own wardrobe and personal taste. Plus, they offer a great basis for playing with proportions, colour and texture. Mix the old with the new and find what works for you.

Enough waffle from me, let’s crunch some numbers.

Print Blouse + Leggings = Work Outfit Inspo

Work wardrobe fatigue is real, especially in January. A comfy print blouse worn with high waisted leggings – or, if you need a classically smart look, structured work trousers – will give you an even mix of comfort and work polish to see you through Zoom calls and deadlines.

Jumper + Silky Midi = Winter Weekend Chic

There’s something about the contrast of a snuggly jumper and silky midi skirt that feel very ‘put together’. It’s an outfit that’s comfy enough for traipsing around the shops, but dressy enough for a spontaneous cocktail. The Callie knit’s ribbed sleeves and roll-neck are extra cosy, and its roomy shape will drape beautifully over a fitted midi. Wear with a heeled ankle boot or toughen it up with DM-style lace-ups

Shacket + Basics = Easy Everyday Comfies

Lumberjack, but make it fashion. A cosy shacket or roomy overshirt layered over everyday basics like simple tees, camis, leggings or wax coated jeans is an outfit I revert to all the time. Contrasting a check print with neutrals will make the colours pop, and in the summer, you can switch up your shacket for a denim jacket. Wear with trainers or chunky boots of your choice.

You can wear it over any kind of bra, and thanks to its under-bust detail, it’s extra flattering. Try it with a court shoe or block-heeled ankle boot, but if you’re a flats girl, slip on your faithful white trainers.

Take the look up a level with a standout print, like the Margo blouse’s colourful vintage-style dots. On your feet, this formula calls for with Chelsea boots, strappy low heels or flats.
