What To Wear To A Wedding: 5 Wedding Guest Outfit Ideas

Watch the full video here.

It’s officially wedding season – how do we know? Well, the temperature has crept up high enough to make wearing a big white dress seem appropriate, it’s still light outside after 5pm and trees are starting to look green (rather than brown) again. Generally speaking, everything is a little bit nicer and prettier – aka, perfect for weddings.

This means that you now have a whole load of happy couples to celebrate in the sunshine. If you’re in need of some killer outfit inspiration, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’re talking dresses, jumpsuits, trousers, prints – all the good stuff.

Disclaimer: you’re going to look great in these looks, but not as great as the bride (don’t be that person).

Outfit #1 – The Classic Wrap Dress

Wrap dresses are always a great choice for a wedding, regardless of age, height or body type. Universally flattering and also extremely comfortable, wrap style dresses look great whilst still being on-trend. Whilst comfort levels might seem like a very uncool point to consider, think of this – you’re going to be sitting for extended periods of time, eating and drinking (beware of the Prosecco bloat) and most likely having a good old dance. Do you want to feel restricted? Probably not, which is why a wrap dress is a safe bet.

This wrap dress features a bold yet sophisticated print, the colours of which are perfect for spring/summer weddings. This also takes out the stress of accessorising – stick to nude heels and subtle accessories to let the dress do all the talking.

Outfit #2 – A Reception Ready Style

If you’re heading to a wedding with an emphasis on the evening reception, then feel free to dress in a slightly sexier, party ready style. Whilst you might feel out of place wearing a bodycon dress in a place of worship, they’re perfect for less formal weddings or ones where the majority of the guests only attend the reception.

If you’re not a fan of bright colours or prints and would normally a black dress, navy is a really great alternative. This navy dress has a structured shoulder detail which is perfect at drawing the eye without being overtly attention grabbing. The tailored fit and subtle colour creates an effortless look that is both elegant and figure flattering.

Outfit #3 – Wedding Abroad Appropriate

If you’re wondering what to wear to a wedding abroad then this look is perfect. The combination of florals with a blue base is perfect for a wedding in the sun. Again, it is a wrap style, which when you add in the floaty fit and cap sleeves, is perfect for keeping you comfy in the heat. Dresses such as this one look great with both flat sandals and high heels, so you’re covered wherever the ceremony takes place. Nothing says beach wedding like sand and sangria!

Outfit #4 –  A Wedding Guest Dress Alternative

Dresses are not the be all and end all of occasion wear. Honestly, we’re not all lovers of dresses, so why force yourself to wear something you normally wouldn’t? We all look our best when we’re the most comfortable and confident, so if dresses aren’t for you, don’t force yourself to wear one.

The right bodysuit and trousers are equally as smart as a dress. Buy trousers that are tailored and a top that not only fits well, but pulls the outfit together. Here, the trousers are belted to cinch in the waist and the bodysuit is relatively form fitting. This look is also a great mix of print and colour, which makes it perfect for weddings in spring and summer. Even if you do love dresses, this is still a great option.

If bright colours and prints are too bold for you, swap the trousers for ones in a more neutral shade.

Outfit #5 – Wedding Guest Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits are a gift that keeps on giving. Don’t want to show your legs? Jumpsuit. Can’t be bothered to match up separates? Jumpsuit. Worried the weather isn’t your friend? Jumpsuit.

Yes, there is always the question of ‘how will I go to the toilet?’, but sometimes minor sacrifices need to be made in the name of style. If the bride can work out how to visit the loo in her dress, you can make it work in a jumpsuit.

Jumpsuits at weddings are perfect for making a statement. Whether you choose a minimalist style, or one that is more eye catching, you’re bound to get complimented on your choice. This navy jumpsuit is classic in colour and style, perfect for understated glamour. Pair with nude shoes to elongate your legs and add an on-trend statement hair clip to accessorise.
